Sivasspor step on to European stage
European football comes to the 4 Eylül Stadium for the first time on Sunday as Sivasspor play Montenegrin club OFK Grbalj in the second leg of their UEFA Intertoto Cup tie – with coach Bülent Uygun urging his team to "play for your mother and father, your city and your country".
First-leg draw
The team from Sivas, in the north-east of Turkey, pushed Galatasaray AS, Fenerbahçe SK and Beşiktaş JK all the way last season and finished fourth in only their third top-flight campaign, enough to earn a UEFA competition debut. They drew 2-2 in Montenegro last week despite being below strength and having goalkeeper Akin Vardar sent off after 30 minutes with first choice Michael Petkovic alreadfy away on international duty with Australia. Mehmet Yıldız was the hero, opening the scoring and then equalising late in the first half.
Ambition
Ticket prices have been reduced this weekend to encourage fans to cheer Sivasspor to within a third-round tie against SC Braga of a UEFA Cup bow, and Uygun, who will invoke family and national pride in his team-talk, believes they have an excellent chance of making an impact. "We were able to keep the squad who kept up their title bid until the final two weeks of last season and were declared champions of the fans' hearts," he said. "We have bolstered our squad with seven new signings. Sivasspor want to advance through the third round of the Intertoto and we're only focused on that. We are very ambitious about qualifying for the UEFA Cup. Therefore, we are thinking about our next opponents SC Braga who are one of the leading clubs in Europe."
Title dream
Uygun fielded an untried lineup last week, and explained why. "There are four or five promising young players in my squad who we want to loan out to second division clubs," he said. "I wanted them to improve themselves. They generally put on a satisfying performance despite having only been in training for ten days." Once the Intertoto Cup is out of the way, Uygun's focus will turn to the new domestic season, starting in late August, and he is confident that their 2007/08 performance was no fluke. "Thinking about the league, we will be the toughest team for our opponents just like last year," he added. "Now we want to build on last year's performance by winning the league. We want to relive those nice feelings and achieve what we truly deserved last season."
Balili back
Petkovic and the suspended Vardar will both sit out Sunday's match, meaning a likely start for Volkan Ünlü, while key midfielder Mohamed Ali Kurtuluş underwent knee surgery a few days ago. However, defender Abdurrahman Dereli is likely to return. Israel striker Pini Balili returned last week for his first game since suffering a serious shoulder injury against Galatasaray in December. He swiftly resumed his partnership with Yıldız, setting up the opening goal on 14 minutes.
