So Intel's new Raptor Lake platform is finally here with the 13th Gen CPUs. I managed to get my hands on the flagship 13900K CPU with EVGA Z790 DARK KINGPIN just day before the actual launch and spent the entire weekend testing the platform thoroughly. I think the platform is pretty much just an extended version of the previous Alder Lake generation. The overall overclocking experience and behaviour feels very similar. Only the clock speeds have gone up tremendously. When you run the CPU for the first time you will be greeted with extremely high temperatures and it doesn't get easier once you go further if you want to squeeze even more performance out from the CPU. If you only run a high-end air cooler or simple AIO you pretty much have to start with undervolting, as the CPU easily hits 100 degrees in AVX based workloads even at stock. When I briefly tested different levels in Prime95 the heat loads exceed 400W easily, and the max was between 450 and 500W, which is crazy high for any mainstream CPU with small footprint. I managed to push around 5.8GHz from all of the P-cores in non-AVX based workloads with 1.35v. The Atom cores are very similar as on the previous generation, with 1.27v being the sweetspot Atom voltage for air and water cooling. Those I managed to max out at 4.7GHz in various tests but it was quite on the edge. The cache is easy to get to 5GHz and beyond it seems. As the competition between Intel and AMD is very tough, these new launches are set to the max already at the factory so there isn't much room to overclock due to this. You need to make sure the CPU isn't throttling either from heat or from wrong settings. The setting called "Enhanced TVB" has to be disabled to prevent throttling when going above the stock turbo of 5.5GHz. I think most of the spotlight will lean more on the memory this generation, as the new and highly anticipated A-die DDR5 Memory IC from SK Hynix can easily hit DDR5-8000MT/s and even beyond that. With this bulk/green PCB kit that I got from TaoBao it was very easy to hit HCI Memtest stable at DDR5-8000 and CL35-48-48-42 2T. Command Rate 1T is still in the works. We have already seen test stable frequencies even higher than that, more towards 8400-8500+ frequencies. The video includes my basic overclocking guide and explanation of the different settings inside the BIOS. Even though as the video was made on the EVGA Z790 DARK KINGPIN, the same rules apply to any other high-end Z690 or Z790 motherboard, so follow the instructions carefully.
