Although I can't prove it I assumed that HTC had purposefully made the beats phone sound much worse with the beats audio disabled to give the consumer the idea that beats did in fact make the phone sound better with headphones.
TLDR Beats audio only makes a phone sound better because the phone is purposefully made to sound worse with it disabled.
