Seas0nPass.jpgNOTE: Seas0nPass provides an 'un-tethered' jailbreak for the latest 4.2.2 (iOS 4.3) AppleTV software. This means the steps found under the "Using Seas0nPass for a tethered boot" section can be skipped.

Seas0nPass troubleshooting tips can be found here.
Pre-launch checklist

1. Make sure you're running the latest version of iTunes.(son versiyon iTunes olmalı)
2. Download Seas0nPass: Mac [10.6 or later] | Windows [XP or later] (windows xp ve üstü olmalı)
3. A micro USB cable will be required to complete the jailbreak. (micro usb kablo olmalı)
4. Disconnect all iPods, iPhones, and iPads from the computer before running Seas0nPass. (jailbreak yapılacak pc de bağlı başka apple ürünün olmamalı)

Using Seas0nPass to jailbreak the AppleTV

Step 1: Unzip the 'Seas0nPass.zip' file and launch Seas0nPass.(http://files.firecore.com/SP/Seas0nPass.zip bu linkten indirilip zip içerisinde cıkartılır)

Step 2: If your AppleTV is not yet jailbroken, select 'Create IPSW'. Step 3: The latest AppleTV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom 'jailbroken' software file. (daha onceden yuklu ipsw yoksa download etmesi için bekliyoruz)

Step 4: When prompted, connect your AppleTV using a micro-USB cable (leave power disconnected), and hold both the 'MENU' and 'PLAY/PAUSE' buttons for 7 seven seconds.(micro-usb kablosu ile pc ye bağlı olan apple tv 2nd kumandasını aşağıda resimde görüldüğü gibi tuşlara aynı anda 7 saniye basıp DFU moda girmesine çalışıyoruz)

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process. (işlem tamam olduktan sonra otomatik olarak iTunes penceri acılacaktır.)

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete - your AppleTV is now jailbroken!

You will now see the Seas0nPass menu after connecting the AppleTV to your TV. (Tüm bu işler bittikten sonra tv ye bağladıgımı Apple tv 2nd ana ekranında SeasOnPass sekmesini gördüysek herşey yolunda demektir.)

Using Seas0nPass for a 'tethered boot'

Some AppleTV software versions require a tethered boot. This means the AppleTV must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note: The AppleTV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the 'Boot Tethered' option.

Step 2: When prompted, connect the AppleTV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the 'MENU' and 'PLAY/PAUSE' buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 3: Seas0n Pass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the AppleTV stops flashing. (Don't worry there is ample to do this, so you don't need Superman speed).

I was never a big fan of 'HTPC' or Home Theater Personal Computer. I always have been watching videos on my computer and never felt a need of a HTPC. But I think that was because I never actually owned a TV for myself. From I was 15 to 16, I didn't have a TV. Or, to be specific, I didn't have cable that was hooked up to the TV. The TV was in my parent's room and they only watched Video/DVD with it. I think that's when I started downloading movies and tv shows on my computer and started watching all of them on my computer. Since then I just got used to not having a TV.

Now, I live in an apartment and somehow got a used 42" LCD TV. Not too fancy, it only shows up to 720p video, 60 hz and kinda thick too. I've been just playing my xbox with it since I got the TV. The first time that I ever felt that I need a HTPC was very recent when my friends came over and wanted to watch some movies. All my movie collection is stored in my desktop. Xbox supports playing media through network so I tried to watch videos on it. Problem with watching videos on XBOX was it cannot play any of HD movies that I have and it is also very laggy / slow when it comes to playing a video through network.

One day, I was just web surfing and found this blog:

Apple TV 2 as HTPC solution? When I saw that post, I jumped on it and got the Apple TV right away. Now, the retail price is $99 and it is available on Apple Store. However, I got one from ebay and paid only about $75. Not bad for a HTPC solution don't you think? Here is what I got:

It's pretty neat looking box, and it is crazy small. Smaller than the size of my hand.

Before I get anyone excited, a few things that you need to know about Apple TV:

* It can only output 720p. If you play 1080p video, it will decode it to 720p and send it out to TV.
* Can't be a USB host
* It has wireless built in to it, but to set it up initially, you need to have this hooked it up to the router physically using ethernet cable

Anyway, I got it, tried the method that was stated in the blog mentioned above, and it wasn't working properly for me. I should have researched it more, but now I know how I should set this up. Here is how you should set this up.

1. Jailbreak the Apple TV

Like all other Apple products except for laptops/desktops, this thing has Apple OS in it, which means you need to Jailbreak to get the root access and do whatever you want to do with it. Easiest way I found to jailbreak it is following this page:

After you are done with above, connect the Apple TV to your router, and get the IP Address of Apple TV which should be shown in Setting -> General

If you follow this, you should be able to SSH into apple tv using its IP Address. Username would be 'root' and the password for the username is 'alpine' by default.

2. Install Nito TV

Now, you can go on and install XBMC (I'll explain this later), but Nito TV is something that is very useful to apple tv and it just saves so much time to do anything. Here is the script to install it:

apt-get install wget

dpkg -i com.nito.deb

apt-get update
apt-get install com.nito.nitotv
killall AppleTV

This puts 'Nito TV' menu on the home screen of Apple TV.

3. Block iOS update using Nito TV

This in my opinion is pretty important step. iOS update causes a lot of problem with jailbreak and apps that need a root access.

First, go into Nito TV -> Settings ->Disable Apple Updates

This should be enough for some of you, but this wasn't enough for myself. So, now go into Nito TV, install 'UpdateBeGone' package. This blocks all Apple Updates and you won't have any problems later. This doesn't mean you won't be able to install any iOS updates. It just disables the updater. You can update it manually.

4. Install XBMC

http://www.xbmc.org

This is a wonderful program that runs off almost anything. It sort of gives you a media center look of it and let you play videos/music and so much more. You can just go to the website and find out what it is, that would be easier.

Anyway, Nito TV has this as a package. How convenient! Just go into Nito TV and install the package, and after a restart, XBMC will be one of the menu on Apple TV home screen. Just go in there, and now you got yourself a HTPC

4.1 Optional XBMC install

What you installed through XBMC was just a stable version of XBMC. Apparently this does not included Hardware Acceleration that Apple TV can use. There are bunch of people that didn't install this and have no problem using it, but if you want, you can follow this step to update XBMC to the unstable latest version

rm latest_atv2.deb

This would install the latest version that has hardware acceleration functionality into it.

5. Set up your computer to share video

Unfortunately, Apple TV2 cannot act as USB host. What this means is basically, you cannot plug any USB devices into it and use it. So, you cannot put any external hdd or usb drive. Only way to play movies is to access videos from a computer.

This is pretty easy because you can just 'Share' your video folder on your computer and XBMC in Apple TV will be able to access it using SMB. This actually worked quiet well for me since I don't store any of my videos in the external drive, but in my computer

Now, your apple tv can act as HTPC! You can actually set up your remote controller for TV to control APple TV, or you can even get a Bluetooth keyboard to work with it. You can find all the info for this athttp://www.xbmc.org
