    What is so appealing about the message of AKP? Why did half of Turkish voters choose that party in the last elections? Explain and give concrete examples to support your argument. Few in the United States can forget the reform-minded spirit that a young, fresh face in Barack Obama brought to our country in his campaign for President three years ago. Obama was “change we could believe in,” as evidenced by the plethora of bumper stickers and other paraphernalia that adorned city streets in the country. Few in Turkish cities today can ignore the ubiquitous and loud publicity that is “Türkiye Hazır Hedef”—the Justice and Development Party (AKP)’s symbol for an ambitious economic, foreign, and transportation reform plan that the party seeks to implement by the year 2023. Both the Obama and the AKP campaigns successfully challenged the existing political atmosphere of their respective arenas by appealing to a diverse audience and promising that the best days were ahead. Since the AKP came to power in 2002, those better days were indeed established for many. Since the June 2011 election in which the AKP won about 50 percent of the popular vote, more better days were promised. Because the AKP affected change and it continues to promise to do so, it enjoys success in Turkey’s parliament. The AKP was especially able to address Turks’ economic discontent, which helped propel its position as a powerful force in Turkey. It is said that the AKP came to power in 2002 because the “Turkish electorate usually votes to punish the past rather than to govern the future” (Yavuz, 80). Despite this, the AKP has been re-elected two more times in general elections, each time with a more substantial base than before. In 2002, for example, the AKP received 34 percent of the popular vote, whereas it received 47 percent in the 2007 election. The AKP’s early appeal can be traced to Erdogan’s down-to-earth “local” attitude and because people were able to relate to him and other party members. Similarly was Obama’s appeal three years ago.
